Education:

Education is the single most important issue facing South Dakota, as well as the rest of the US, today. As the world becomes progressively more global, it becomes increasingly critical that we not fall behind. Our school administrators and teachers have worked diligently under growing financial constraints to keep our schools performing well. It is urgent that we address these issues of funding to assure our children the quality education they need to be succesful and lead South Dakota into the future.

Economics / Energy:

South Dakota is a state rich in clean, renewable energy sources. We have a strong ethanol industry - but have several other under developed resources such as bio-diesel, cellulosic and switch grasses. South Dakota has according to the US Dept. of Energy good-to-excellent wind energy resources throughout the state and prominent excellent-to-outstanding areas in over half the state! Wind energy alone also provides more jobs per dollar invested than any other energy resource. Yet at this time South Dakota has no legislated goals towards untilization of renewable energy resources. The potential here for the creation of jobs, industry and income is incredible. The time to do this is NOW!

Healthcare:

The rising cost of healthcare has become a national emergency, and as long as our federal government refuses to deal with this in a meaningful way, the states must do what we can to insure that everyone has affordable access. South Dakota is very lucky to have several large hospital systems, and I believe the state should work closely with them to insure that everyone in the state can enjoy their benefits.

Early Childhood Education:

Current research is showing the benefits of early childhood education for economic reasons as well as for academic advances for children. For each 1 dollar spent, the community sees a benefit of 12-13 dollars. Kids in these programs are less likely to be retained, less likely to need special remedial help, less likely to get involved in crime and drugs and more likely to get better jobs and pay taxes. This results in a stronger quality workforce that improves the economy in a community.
